I have had so many holidays ruined by things that bite, mostly mosquitoes.
Rarely does a holiday go by when I don’t end up at the local hospital with some huge swelling or itching so badly I can’t sleep.
On my one and only trip to the Maldives, I got bitten so badly on the first day, I was up all night for the entire week going crazy with itchiness. I had to get all sorts of lotions and potions to calm it down but they never really worked. Then, alarmingly, on my last day, the tops of my palms became covered in little blister-like bumps. The doctor felt sure this was because of the bites. These bumps lasted for months.
I’ve been on the hunt for products that are natural and safe
And that work! I’ve found some truly marvellous things to both prevent bites and help with the itching if you do get bitten.

Alfresco Anti Bug Bite Spray –
a wonderful spray made by a perfume house that smells fresh and light. Deet-free, natural and filled with botanical essential oils.
Mrs White’s Unstung Hero Mosquito Repellent –
a best seller for its wonderful light, citrusy smell. Deet-free and full of natural repellents like citronella. Good for all the family and can be used on the body, clothing and bed sheets.
Incognito Insect Repellent –
I don’t feature this spray in the video but it’s a great brand that was one of the first to bring out natural repellents. All feet-free and chemical-free.
Zap-Ease Instant Bite Relief by Incognito –
This Incognito bite zapper was new to me and it works a treat. It’s a little gadget that you fire (a small electric charge comes out the end) onto your bite. It neutralises the histamine (which causes the swelling and itching) and the itchiness stops almost instantly. No battery needed and last for years.
Moskinto Itch-Relief Patch –
These are little latex-free plasters that you place over a swollen itchy bite and stays on for days. It’s waterproof so you can swim or shower. It instantly soothes the itch and keeps working day and night. Perfect for both adults and children.
It works by draining away the residue left behind by the bite and is safe for all ages. It contains no medication and is non-toxic.
